Without senses
Without Senses Lab
The Without Senses lab was a lab that that enabled students to experience a little bit of what it's like to have a disability. These disabilities varied from having to use crutches, a cane, or a wheelchair, to having impaired eyesight or hearing, and more. We had different activities that we had to complete and further reflect upon the challenges that each disability presented for an individual. Then we had to think of ways that we could make it easier for the individual with the disability to function beyond their impairment. This gave the students better perspective on what patients may be struggling with and how they have to cope with these struggles. It was a very beneficial experience to understand what it feels like to have a disability.
Group/Individual Presentation
We were then divided into groups to create a presentation on whatever "sense" we were assigned. My group's sense was taste and smell. For our presentation we had to describe the anatomy that goes along with this sense (nose and tongue) and then each individual in the group was assigned a condition that affected this sense. We each had to research and present our conditions after the initial "sense" presentation with anatomy was complete. Our individual conditions were about 5 minutes each and the anatomy part was about 10 minutes.
