Basic Curriculum
We began this unit by doing word elements from the skeletal system like usual and having a quiz on them after a short period of time. We got all of our vocab from the textbook and McNeal did his PowerPoint teaching on the skeletal system. This information is all on the exam, yikes! I know I was worried about remembering all those bone names and types of bones. Luckily we had great review time with the following activities.

Review with Bones Lab
We spent time in class going over the names of bones, the fossa's, tuberosity's, etc. We did this by having two full sets of skeletal bones in a pile and groups in the class start sorting them and assembling the skeleton back together. This may seem easy but it is much more challenging then it sounds. There are so many parts to the skeleton and they all have a unique spot in the body. That's a lot to remember! We would let McNeal know when we were done, or thought we were, and he would tell us whether we had it all correct or not. It was a difficult activity, but since all the people in each group were able to contribute their own part we helped each other out a lot.

Bones of the Skeleton Drawing Project
Each table group was then assigned a group of bones to draw. With everyone in the class drawing a few bones we would have a full skeleton of drawn bones by the due date. Though many people are not artistic, this was an assignment that was helpful because of the visual aspect of it. Some people are visual learners and will remember things a lot easier by focusing on the curves, edges and marks of the bones. The purpose of this was to get a detailed and in depth understanding of the bones that were assigned to each individual.

I have to say, this was a very challenging unit. It's never easy when there is such a large amount of something to memorize. But, however, the rewarding feeling at the end is completely worth it. After that final exam you can take a deep breath and tell yourself you did it. The accomplishment is priceless. Don't get discouraged by a challenge, just take it one step at a time and soon you'll be looking back wondering how you did it!
