hand washing |
|
This was the first unit that we began with in Health Science. The purpose of this unit was to recognize the easy transition of germs and bacteria resulting in the importance of hand washing. Hand washing is the main preventative of the spread of such viruses and if more people are informed of this there would be a lot less passing of illnesses. It's a great way to start off the year because then we can continue on with the awareness of bacteria and the necessity of quality hand washing,
especially working in the medical field.

Individual Assignments
We started off the hand washing unit with a PowerPoint teaching from Ms. Lutu of the transmission of bacteria that we would later have an exam on. For this unit we had three different individual assignments that we were to complete as well. We had a list of hand washing terms that we were to define, we researched Ignaz Semmelweis and created summaries from the various articles we found. Then lastly, based off those summaries, we had to create a children's book about him and the accomplishments/effects he had on society. These assignments counted only toward your own grade. It's important to not get behind because even having to catch up one day will throw off the whole schedule for you.

Group Assignment
After going into the lab and learning the correct procedure for washing hands in order to get as much bacteria off as possible, we started our group project. As you can see from the two examples above done by students at CAL this year, we created a poster with the steps to hand washing on it. Yes, there are correct and incorrect steps to hand washing! We completed this poster together and had to use a lot of teamwork to effectively even out the work load. It's difficult when one person wants to take over and do the whole thing, but the only way that groups will be successful is cooperating and trusting each other. It takes time and patience but it will happen!
